The forgetting that heals

Have you ever been going about your normal day when suddenly your thoughts were lifted up by a marvelously inspiring idea? In those few moments, you simply forgot all about the things that had been disturbing you. For a while at least, you were filled with peace and joy.

Don't we all long to have such a peace-filled consciousness all the time—no bad memories, no constant anguish of pain? Sometimes it almost seems beyond hope that such freedom could exist. And yet our deepest intuitions tell us that good alone is what is true, what is real, what lasts.

How do we find this quiet peace and health? Sleep isn't the answer. Sleep brings only a temporary respite; then we are awake again — and the hurting is still with us. The real release comes from waking up. But waking up to what?
