Healing and the new birth

From the April 1991 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Every Christian Science healing is an instance of spiritual progression. More than a change in a physical condition or an improvement in human experience, it represents a yielding of thought to God. Personal fears, uncertainties, and anguishes are silenced by a newly grasped understanding of the perfection and allness of divine Mind. That's why every spiritual healing gives evidence of the "new birth," which Christ Jesus spoke of when he said, "Ye must be born again." John 3:7.

This birth is the appearing of the true, Christly identity of the individual man. It is the process by which a man's actual spiritual identity becomes more and more apparent here and now, in human life.

The new birth is the increasing domination of the human by the divine, and the corresponding subjugation of the carnal or animal nature. It is largely a matter of overcoming sin, divesting human nature of its baser tendencies, purifying our thoughts and desires, and yielding to the higher demands of Christian living and spiritual goodness. But it also involves giving up our belief and trust in material causation and matter-based manhood in order that we may recognize, honor, and rely on God alone as creator and cause.
