Trusting God's promises

From the July 1991 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Do you know anyone who makes lots of promises but isn't very good at keeping them? To place unquestioned faith in such an individual is an open door to disappointment. There is one, however, whose word we can always trust, whose promises are always kept without favor and without whim—our heavenly Parent, God.

In times of trouble, a little child instinctively rushes to Mother or Father, trusting that within their protecting embrace all will be well. The child looks to his or her parents for answers to problems, confident that what they say is true. And when a parent makes a promise, the child accepts without question that what was promised will come to pass. Shouldn't we, with the same childlike trust, look to our Father-Mother God for guidance, protection, supply? Shouldn't we accept His word as truth, and trust that God keeps His promises to us?

The inspired writers of the Bible are quite emphatic about this point, reassuring us that God is forever carrying out His assurances of good to each of us. Peter, for example, speaks of the "exceeding great and precious promises" II Pet. 1:4. given to everyone seeking the knowledge of God. The Scriptures, in fact, are filled with spiritual insights that comfort and heal and meet our needs.
