Freeing ourselves from the yoke of heredity

From the October 1992 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The foundation of heredity is the conception that man is physical—that matter forms, shapes, and characterizes man. But this time-honored, solid conviction about the nature of man can yield progressively to a more spiritual perception of ourselves, a perception that brings healing.

The Bible repeatedly points to God as our Father. Christ Jesus' teachings are replete with references to God as Father, including the prayer Christians throughout the world share—the Lord's Prayer. Father isn't just an honorary term for God. It points to His actual relationship to us as our divine Parent, our Father-Mother.

As God's offspring, we come directly from God. We're His spiritual image. The image of Spirit, God, isn't formed in or by matter. Spirit alone forms its own image—endows man with its own substance, expresses in man its own divine perfection.
