Readers of the Journal may know that the articles printed in the Christian Science periodicals are submitted by authors from a diversity of countries. Much of this material must be carefully translated by a staff of dedicated and professional workers so that all our readers may benefit from its message. We thought our readers would be interested in the following award received.
Karl Kummer, Manager of the Department of Translations of The Christian Science Publishing Society, was chosen to receive the Alexander Gode Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the American Translators Association (ATA). This medal is awarded in recognition of exceptional contributions to the profession of translation. It is always given to a program or person whose overall contribution—be it literary, scientific, or technical—has made a significant impact on the field of translation. This commemorative medal, which was created in honor of a distinguished translator and one of the founders of ATA, is not awarded annually but only when merited by outstanding achievement.
Mr. Kummer has served as ATA treasurer, president-elect, and president. A practitioner listed in The Christian Science Journal, he began translating for the Publishing Society in 1969 in his native Germany, where he had also worked in the Committee on Publication office in Berlin and had written articles for The Herald of Christian Science. He started working in the Translations Department in Boston in 1970, where he was later promoted to manager of the Germanic and Slavic Languages Division. He became department manager in 1978.
