The November 24, 1993, issue of The Christian Science Monitor marks the eighty-fifth anniversary of our daily newspaper. "Publishing a world-class newspaper every day for eighty-five years could only be achieved with the prayers and support of Christian Scientists throughout the world," said Editor Richard J. Cattani. "Our appreciation also goes to past and present writers and editors, to our subscribers, and to all those who unite with us in the Monitor's purpose to bless mankind."
When Mary Baker Eddy founded The Christian Science Journal in 1883, she wrote that "a newspaper edited and published by the Christian Scientists has become a necessity" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 4). After twenty-five years of patient preparation, Mrs. Eddy's ideal of a daily newspaper found its full expression in The Christian Science Monitor. Shortly before the first edition, Mrs. Eddy wrote, "Beloved Christian Scientists:—Accept my thanks for your successful plans for the first issue of The Christian Science Monitor. My desire is that every Christian Scientist, and as many others as possible, subscribe for and read our daily newspaper" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, pp. 352-353).
