Mary Baker Eddy's hymns

From the December 1993 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Editors' note: In our study of Christian Science it is natural to want to share the inspiration that comes to us. We long to follow Jesus' counsel "What ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops." Matt. 10:27. Such inspiration comes out of the context of our own lives. We recognize that it is not definitive or "official," but that does not deprive it of significance. The following article comes out of a life rich in the practice of Christian Science and with deep regard for our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy. It is more interpretive than most articles we print—it's an account of individual insight and inspiration —but we felt this piece might inspire others to read Mrs. Eddy's poems and find their own inspiration and light, which such study always brings.

Over a period of thirty-two years Mary Baker Eddy wrote, among other poems, seven that are now set as hymns in the Christian Science Hymnal. These hymns necessarily mirror something of both the challenges and triumphs in Mrs. Eddy's life. Studying them over the years, I've gained some insights by considering them in the context of Mrs. Eddy's own experience.

Mrs. Eddy's poem "Christ My Refuge" (Hymn Nos. 253-257) was first published in 1868, only two years after her discovery of Christian Science and her remarkable physical healing through prayer alone. After this healing she spent much time studying the Bible and patiently seeking an understanding of the spiritual basis for the healings Christ Jesus accomplished. She had almost no money, no stable home or companionship, few friends who were sympathetic to her revolutionary discovery of the spiritual laws that undergirded Jesus' healing method. In this context, isn't it natural that Mrs. Eddy's refuge was Christ, as the title of this hymn indicates?
