In Psalms we read: "Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me" (139:7-10). I certainly experienced the protection and omnipresence of divine Love, of which this beautiful psalm speaks.
Before becoming a Christian Scientist and discovering God's laws of good, I found myself trapped in the hell of alcohol and drug addiction; my life consisted exclusively of serving these appetites. I tried taking my life twice, and both times the physicians who saved me could not understand how I was still alive. When I look back on those years I am sure it is proof of God's omnipresence that I am still here.
It is noteworthy that one of the names for alcohol is spirits. What I was actually trying to do was to fill the enormous void I felt. I was yearning for spiritual fulfillment, but I was looking for it where I would never find it.
