Interview with a prison inmate

From the October 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Through an exchange of letters, contributing editor interviewed a man whose thinking and life have been radically changed through his study of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

You were in prison for eighteen years before learning about Christian Science through reading Science and Health. What was it in this book that first spoke to you?

Science and Health was first introduced to me here at the prison by my horticulture teacher. Before reading it, I had some talks with her about God and God's forgiveness. I remember her explaining how God only sees His perfect, good creation. I really wasn't sure what she meant. After a couple of weeks of reading Science and Health this was still confusing, but I could see progress in how I was thinking. The one thing that stuck with me was "But man cannot be separated for an instant from God, if man reflects God." Science and Health, p. 306. That was what I really needed to know. From that point on, I understood what my friend was telling me. God didn't recognize me as a criminal, a murderer, but He loves me as a perfect son, as His reflection. This fact was and is very comforting. Even though there were confusing times in reading Science and Health, from the very beginning this wonderful book Mrs. Eddy has given us has helped me understand my true being. It has helped me see there is no life outside of God.
