One-hundredth anniversary of the Manual of The Mother Church

From the October 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

September 1895 saw a compact but widely applicable book published—the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy, who had founded The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1879. The book is much read, because it's more than a dignified demonstration of spiritual law and order in church government, the appointment of officers, and the conduct of church services. It more than provides for Christian Science activities worldwide, including public Reading Rooms and lectures that are part of each democratically run branch church's welcome to the community Because the Manual was written in God-impelled response to hard situations facing the early workers, it's a timeless problem-solver; its Rules are found meeting needs in changing times. Whoever obeyed the book's By-Laws, Mrs. Eddy promised, would find increased spirituality and ability to heal the sick, comfort those in mourning, and rouse sinners from sin. Committed to the spiritual discipline of prayer in working together, the Manual gives a guideline for church and individual affairs: that they be carried out in Christian fellowship, with the love Christ Jesus said would identify his followers. And it's in that spirit that we honor this book's one-hundredth anniversary.
