Soldiers of Christ: a call to arms

From the October 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Have you ever compared the life of a Christian to that of a soldier? Until recently, I never had. In fact, I really pictured the two as complete opposites. I saw a Christian as one who stands for love, peace, faith in God, and a soldier as representing war and death. Perhaps you have fallen victim to the same stereotypes.

One night I found myself struggling with what appeared to be a serious physical illness. I was very uncomfortable and unable to get any sleep or rest. As a student of Christian Science, I had learned of God's unfailing love for His creation, and knew that I could turn to Him in prayer for help at any time. I felt that I needed to see myself more clearly as God's image and likeness as well as to defend myself against the notion that there could be any power opposed to God; to see that nothing could separate man from the love and perfection of his Maker.

An earnest study of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, brought no immediate change. At one point I simply put my books away, but while doing so was drawn to a biographical sketch a family member had written about a very dear friend. In the introduction to the paper, this friend was described as having been at different times a "Christian Science chaplain, practitioner, teacher, and 'soldier of Christ.' "
