While he was Mayor of New York City, the colorful Ed Koch, following the accomplishment of something productive for the city, would often ask the reporters at a press conference, "How'm I doing?" He was always expecting the answer to be "Great!"
Recently, I thought of applying the question to myself in regard to my practice of Christian Science. How'm I doing? I've been studying the Bible and the works of Mary Baker Eddy a long time. I believe I've grown in my understanding of divine Spirit's allness and of the unreal nature of evil. But am I really practicing Christian Science, as I currently understand it, applying healing truths to every suggestion of evil wherever I see it, and expecting healing results? How well am I practicing Christian Science, full time? The answer, alas, is not always "Great!"
Practicing Christian Science means mentally correcting the false beliefs in disease and sin with the harmonious truths of God's allness. It means nullifying the influence of evil, as it appears to human thought, with what we have learned and felt and perceived of God's perfect, spiritual creation. This requires praying for ourselves, our family, the world, and those who might come to us for help through Christian Science treatment. Treatment in Christian Science includes knowing that God, Spirit, Love, is All-in-all, and that He is reflected everywhere, even right where His perfection and harmony may seem to be absent. It involves knowing with conviction that God's qualities of goodness, harmony, love, and loveliness are the reality of being regardless of how compelling any evidence to the contrary may seem. Christian Science treatment insists reverently, joyously, on God's allness and the perfection of His creation. This treatment embraces holiness, and the result must always be good.
