Looking forward to your church business meeting?

From the November 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Each Sunday people all over the world look forward to hearing in Christian Science church services the inspiring and healing Lesson-Sermon read from the Bible and from Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy. Each Wednesday they anticipate meetings where testimonies of healing are given. But do they look forward to regular church business meetings with equal expectancy of inspiration, uplift, and healing?

I'll have to admit I've found myself dreading upcoming church business meetings and/or leaving them discouraged, angry, and resentful. I've joined with others in judgmental murmurings and dissatisfaction with fellow members' attitudes or decisions. I've been easily drawn away from looking at my own need to challenge and heal a personal sense of being right, superior, or offended.

Is it not a sense of an ego separate from God that causes offense and is offended? God finds no offense in His man. Mrs. Eddy states, "The Ego-man is the reflection of the Ego-God; the Ego-man is the image and likeness of perfect Mind, Spirit, divine Principle." She continues in the next paragraph, "The one Ego, the one Mind or Spirit called God, is infinite individuality, which supplies all form and comeliness and which reflects reality and divinity in individual spiritual man and things." Science and Health, p. 281. Christ Jesus understood the great tenderness in this relationship between the one Ego and man, reflecting that Ego. This knowledge must have made it a joy for him to be constantly about his Father's business.
