Dear Readers

From the March 1996 issue of The Christian Science Journal

This month's issue of The Christian Science Journal is a bit different from usual. It's designed to share with you, in a more comprehensive way than we normally do from month to month, the kinds of activities The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, is currently involved in. But more than that, we want to talk with you about this Church's fundamental healing mission and purpose and also to report specifically on some of what the Church has been focusing on over the last couple of years.

For the past century, the Journal has provided metaphysical ideas and spiritual solutions that Christian thinkers in all walks of life have been able to apply directly in their daily experience. It has also provided an ongoing record of how the Science of Christ has been healing and transforming individual lives. And as the first official periodical published by the Church of Christ, Scientist, the Journal has regularly carried important news about the Church and its healing activities, which we feel has been useful and encouraging not only to Christian Scientists but to many others as well.

The basic mission of the Church has, of course, remained unchanged. In the Manual of The Mother Church it is noted that when the Church was originally organized it was "... designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing." Mary Baker Eddy,Manual of The Mother Church, p. 17 One specific purpose that church members have been devoting close attention to in recent years is described in church Founder Mary Baker Eddy's own words referring to the spirit of her life-purpose: ". . . to impress humanity with the genuine recognition of practical, operative Christian Science." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 207
