My mother loved the Bible and tried her best to impart this love to her children. As a youngster I would open the Bible at random, and if it opened to a story or a psalm, I would read it. The words were lovely, but I was often puzzled by the meanings. If I took the stories literally, I found some of them to be enigmatic and quite harsh in their depictions of God.
However, many of my questions were answered when my family took up the study of Christian Science and we were introduced to the Bible Lessons found in the Christian Science Quarterly. Immediately, my mother subscribed to the Quarterly, and I can remember hearing her moving about very early in the morning as she prepared to read "her Lesson." Sometimes she would share with me some uplifting and inspiring insight she had gleaned from her study. Often, I would find her surrounded by her dictionary, Concordances, and reference works on the Bible. She would take copious notes and ponder them.
I did not feel the need to be so studious about religious matters, but at the age of twelve my mother took me to the Christian Science Sunday School in our area, and I began to enjoy discussing the issues raised by the Bible Lessons.
