Humanity under God's care

From the April 1996 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Humanity yearns for care that satisfies the human need in every case. Christ Jesus spoke to that yearning when he said: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me .... For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."Matt. 11:28–30. This tender invitation of the Master stands at the heart of his healing work. Jesus healed every sort of physical ailment as well as sin, offering abundant proof of God's availability and willingness to help and to heal.

It was the spiritual truth of being that underlay Jesus' ability to heal. This was the actual substance of the care he gave, the care that was so obviously powerful throughout his ministry. His healing work was not a combination of material forces and spiritual power, nor a care system based on a knowledge of physiology. Jesus relied on God, Spirit, only. He understood God, whom he called Father, to be perfect Love. He knew that God made man spiritual, not material, and that, as His image, man includes health, perfection, and dominion.

Jesus prayed as a means of knowing God and becoming conscious of divine care. The Bible indicates that he would go off alone, taking time to commune with God. And he clearly found refreshment in divine Truth, because he would come back to the cities and towns to heal and teach. In the ministry of this man the world was given the care provided by God.
