Recently, the Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly included this passage Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: "Identity is the reflection of Spirit, the reflection in multifarious forms of the living Principle, Love" (p. 477). Mary Baker Eddy's words gave me a new concept of man's function. I saw that my identity is meant to reflect Principle in multiple ways —every day. A "living Principle" is not static or rigid. It is alive, buoyant, responsive to human needs. Then, man, as God's reflection, acts intuitively to express Principle's plan. I prayed to be responsive to God's plan that very day.
I learned that the Christian Science Reading Room in our area had received an invitation, sent to all churches, to meet with the chief of police to consider violence in the city. I wanted to participate. I attended and saw this event as an avenue to express "living Principle." The chief stressed the importance of strong families and responsible parents. The Christian Science Monitor had just run a full-page article on "Legal Fatherhood," so at the end of the meeting I asked the police chief if he knew of the plan discussed in the article, and how hospital staffs could use it to encourage an unwed father to sign a statement that committed him to be responsible for the baby. He was immediately interested. So I contacted the hospitals, checked their interest in this plan, and took them the Monitor with the full story.
But there's more! Principle's ideas are so alive that they multiply themselves. So it was natural to ask the chief if he'd like a gift of the Monitor for him and his staff. He said they were always glad for resources that provided solutions to violence.
