In the early part of this century, my mother's eldest sister was diagnosed with incurable consumption. Another sister, living away, heard of the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy and brought it to her. The family engaged a Christian Science practitioner to pray for my aunt, and she was completely cured.
So astonished were the members of this large family of nine brothers and sisters that almost every one bought the book and studied it. Today there are Christian Scientists from this extended family in many parts of the United Kingdom.
I myself was able to pray confidently for the safety of my fiancé during World War II. The first chapter in Science and Health, entitled "Prayer," was a constant guide to me, and there were many other statements in the book that comforted me, as well. One of them reads, "This is the doctrine of Christian Science: that divine Love cannot be deprived of its manifestation, or object; that joy cannot be turned into sorrow, for sorrow is not the master of joy; that good can never produce evil; that matter can never produce mind nor life result in death" (p.304). I remember that I used to read until I was no longer anxious. After the war we were married.
