Overcoming resistance to spiritual healing

From the April 1997 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For the benefit of humanity, it's important to identify the source of resistance to spiritual healing and then deal swiftly and forcibly with it. The carnal, or mortal, mind is what resists healing by spiritual means alone. This so-called mind, described in the Bible as "enmity against God," Rom. 8:7. insists on the supremacy of matter. It claims that man is a sinful creature of the flesh who comes from dust and returns to dust.

To deal effectively with this stultifying influence through prayer, we need to understand some basic points better. The first is that God is All-in-all; therefore He's the only genuine Mind and creator, the only power. And because God is Spirit, as the Bible teaches, and man is God's child, man must be spiritual, the perfect expression of God. Thus, health is normal and disease abnormal—no part of God's creation.

It's through our God-given spiritual sense that we come to understand the deep significance of these scientific facts. As St. Paul said, "The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." I Cor. 2:14.
