In celebrating the centennial year of The Christian Science Publishing Society, the Journal recognizes the many behind-the-scenes sacrifices involved in carrying out its healing mission. To illustrate, here is a brief excerpt from an early employee's reminiscence, one of several being published this year.
I learned much from Miss Mary Bruen, which was a great help to me when, later, in the troublous times, I became Monitor correspondent for Dublin, Ireland. ... Miss Mary Bruen and her sister Miss Eleanor Bruen on a visit to the U.S.A. had a long talk with the Advertising Manager of The Christian Science Monitor. This gentleman explained politely all about Monitor advertising. He enjoyed their visit, but thought of them as merely two charming ladies who had little, if any, knowledge of business. It was not long after their return home when something like two columns of Irish advertisements were sent to the Monitor.
Miss Mary Bruen was the official Irish representative of the Monitor. She was always most ably assisted by her sister, Miss Eleanor Bruen, who later went to London to take charge of the advertising work for the Monitor there.
