Is it safe to rely exclusively on God for physical healing? This question troubled me. You see, my son had just seriously injured his arm in a bicycling accident. Though both of us had immediately turned to God in prayer, symptoms of blood poisoning had begun to appear. As a young girl I had faced a similar situation. Then, still unacquainted with the teachings of Christian Science, my parents had taken me to a hospital where I had received immediate medical attention. Though I had not thought of this in years, vivid mental images of this incident made it hard for me to pray now.
Was turning to God a realistic choice? Was I risking my child's well-being by turning to prayer rather than immediate medical attention? Almost instantly this familiar Bible verse eased my anguish: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Prov. 3:5, 6. As I pondered these calming words, another message came to thought that brought even greater relief to my troubled heart: "What God cannot do, man need not attempt. If God heals not the sick, they are not healed, for no lesser power equals the infinite All-power; but God, Truth, Life, Love, does heal the sick through the prayer of the righteous." Science and Health, p. 231. I recognized this to be a statement from Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy
Immediately my uncertainties vanished. I knew now, with unfaltering conviction, that I could trust my son completely to God. All doubts disappeared. The crippling fear I had felt just a moment before dissolved into profound joy I was ready to rely wholeheartedly on my Father-Mother God. My heart was filled with an overwhelming assurance that God's tender love for His children would restore and heal.
