Getting out of an unbearable situation

From the November 1998 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Over a period of nearly two months, I experienced varying degrees of hearing loss in both ears, accompanied by pressure in the ears. Hearing in large rooms with background noise, or out of doors, was nearly impossible. It was obvious that my prayers had so far not been effective in bringing about the necessary freedom.

A number of times, the suggestion had come to my thought that the difficulty probably could be handled by an application of medicine. But I knew, and wanted to prove, that this problem could be resolved through spiritual growth, which could never be achieved through material medicine. The message of the Scriptures encouraged me to pray for light, for spiritual illumination. Both the Old and New Testaments speak of light as an aspect of God's grace, guiding human thought to a more spiritual condition. The Psalmist sang, "O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles. ... Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God." Ps. 43:3,5.

Over a period of a few days, my prayer was more inspired. I was more mentally active in rejecting the errors of material belief associated with the physical disorder. However, I felt my thought still had not really changed. There was almost a physical sensation of mental inertia. I had learned through previous healings in Christian Science that matter cannot resist the omnipotence of Truth, any more than darkness can refuse to yield to light. Matter has neither intelligence nor might to interfere with divine Mind and its healing power. It seemed logical that the same reasoning could be applied to an unyielding mental state. Against the all-might of Truth and Love—active in my consciousness through Truth-inspired prayer—ignorant or willful mistaken beliefs have no choice but to yield up their false evidence.
