Testimonies of Healing

Our family came into Christian Science...

From the November 1998 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Our family came into Christian Science through a healing my grandmother's sister experienced as a young woman. She was being treated by a medical doctor for a nervous condition, and as she did not improve, he suggested she see a Christian Science practitioner. She did, and she was healed. As a result, several members of the family, including my grandmother, became Christian Scientists. Four generations have now experienced its healing and redeeming power.

Some years ago, I began to suffer frequent bouts with a painfully inflamed throat accompanied by extreme weakness. One day while struggling with this problem, I was reading from Science and Health when my attention was drawn to the description of "the great red dragon" in the Apocalypse as being "inflamed with war against spirituality" and "full of lust" (p. 565). Of course, the word inflamed was of interest to me, but I also felt a strong impulse to consider the word lust. At first I couldn't understand what that had to do with me, but as I listened for guidance I realized that these bouts of inflammation always followed concerns on my part about family or church problems that I felt I had to solve. I would accept the problem as real and then attempt to "fix" it by praying. Certainly it was right to pray, but I was letting personal desire (lust) dictate what I thought was the right solution. I had to learn that healing took place, not through human will, but through humbly yielding to God's will. As it became clear to me that these problems were simply false beliefs that were healed by Truth, all the pain, inflammation, and weakness disappeared, and I was free. I had grasped, to a degree, that God is the only healing power.

All the pain, inflammation,
and weakness disappeared peared.
