Giving back what I have received

From the June 1998 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I was a young woman, a kind neighbor introduced me to Christian Science. She was not a Christian Scientist but had subscribed to and enjoyed the Christian Science Sentinel for many years. I had gone to her for comfort because my life was in turmoil—I felt lost and afraid. In her sweet, motherly way she offered me a stack of Sentinels. After staying up all night reading about Spirit and the law of spiritual healing, I knew I had found the truth Christ Jesus spoke of to his disciples when he said, "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth." John 14:16,17 I saw that Christian healing is not supernatural. Healing results from the activity of the Christ in human consciousness. This healing influence has been "a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" Ps. 119:105 ever since; it has shown me a way of life that has been inspiring and fulfilling. Gratitude for what Christian Science means to me, and for the help I receive from reading the periodicals, has led me to contribute to them myself in order to give back some of what I have received.

For many years Mary Baker Eddy herself was the principal contributor to the periodicals she founded, and she expected the members of her Church to write for them. She says: "If my own students cannot spare time to write to God,— when they address me I shall be apt to forward their letters to Him as our common Parent, and by way of The Christian Science Journal; thus fulfilling their moral obligation to furnish some reading-matter for our denominational organ. Methinks, were they to contemplate the universal charge wherewith divine Love has entrusted us, in behalf of a suffering race, they would contribute oftener to the pages of this swift vehicle of scientific thought; for it reaches a vast number of earnest readers, and seekers after Truth." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 155

In pursuing the goal of writing for the periodicals, I've found that praying is most important! Praying to know that I reflect the boundless inspiration of the divine Mind, and that I am a witness to the unfoldment of this inspiration, lifts the burden of false responsibility. It establishes in thought that God, not a human personality, is the source of all wisdom and intelligence. Inspiration and ability come through quiet communion with God and also through earnest study of the Word of God.
