True opportunity

From the June 1998 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Many people today see their difficulties as rising from a lack of opportunity Perhaps they feel they've missed that one big opportunity or that it hasn't yet come. And there's always the cliché "Opportunity knocks only once."

We tend to think of opportunity as something that comes and goes, a chance event, a happening. It's often thought of as something that is out of our control. But there is another way of looking at it that is more helpful.

Opportunity might be considered in terms of what one achieves by moving forward rather than what one just sits around and hopes for. Opportunity can be seen not as something that may or may not come our way, but rather as something that we go forward to achieve or fulfill. In a deeper sense, we can think of opportunity as something we act upon prayerfully by hearing and doing God's will. The spiritual fact is that God's man is His reflection, always at the standpoint of acting and doing, never just waiting. Man is always bearing witness to good, fulfilling God's will; he is always at the standpoint of true opportunity.
