God's protection in wartime

From the December 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Shortly after President Roosevelt'S declaration of war on December 7, 1941, I enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. My mother and her mother were Christian Scientists, and I attended Christian Science Sunday School for a number of years. My earliest recollections are the emphasis in my life on the First Commandment: "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" (Ex. 20:3).

During my military service, my contact with Christian Science chaplains and my pocket editions of the Bible and Science and Health kept me close to Christian Science. I am certain that my mother's dedicated daily prayer for her two sons in the service, and my own prayer, saw me through my service career safe and unharmed.

I was awarded the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Throughout all my experiences, the thought that I and all mankind are guided and protected by the one Mind, God, was a comforting and stabilizing influence.
