The solution continued to elude us, and I alternated between moments of anxiety, frustration, and discouragement. All I wanted was a sign. Something you couldn't miss. Something that would guide my family in our search for more appropriate housing.
The problem is, if you don't know what you're looking for, you'll probably miss the signs for it. Ever driven past an exit and said, "Oh, was that it?"
So what were we looking for? Like many young families, we were outgrowing our home. It was one we loved, with grace and proportion and beautiful details. And it was light and cheerful. But as real estate agents told us bluntly, it was a very small house, something that might appeal to a single person or perhaps a retired couple. But on a busy road? When the region was in an economic slump? They shook their heads. And if we couldn't sell what we had, we couldn't afford anything else. So we considered adding on, but that was even more problematic. In the midst of all the conflicting opinions and confusion, what we were really looking for was guidance.
