SAFETY

Safe in His shadow

There is a place where every one of us is totally secure, and this place is God's presence.

From the February 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Jesus Was Once Teaching in the temple, and some of the people became so angry at his statements that they were actually about to throw stones at him. The Bible says he "hid himself" and walked right through the middle of that crowd, undetected and safe. See John 8:59 How wonderful it would be to be able to hide oneself in this way.

There is a safe place for every one of us, where we are actually hidden from danger, and this place is God's presence. It is the secret place: "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.... He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust." Ps. 91:1, 4

What is this secret place like? When we think of being hidden, we tend to think of isolated or dark places, of hiding in shadows or under cover. But "the shadow of the Almighty" is light, specifically, the light of Truth. The secret place is open, joyous, and filled with light; not dark, lonely, or mysterious. In the secret place, the presence of God is all there is, and therefore, there is only the consciousness and existence of good. In this consciousness of good, there is not even the suggestion of evil; man and all creation are as God created them, spiritual and perfect.
