INDIVIDUALITY

Be yourself— the real one!

You might ask, "I'm me, and who else can I be?"

From the February 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I was a little girl, I occasionally had temper tantrums. When this happened, an aunt who lived with us would quietly say to me, "Do be yourself, dear." Almost immediately there'd be a swing back to my usual good nature. It seemed as though I was always swinging back and forth from one personality trait to another. But later on in life I found that while being a good-natured person is commendable, much more is required of us if we're to be true Christians. As followers of Christ Jesus, we can learn to express more fully man's actual, spiritual nature, which Jesus exemplified.

But why does it seem so much easier to talk (or write) about man's spiritual nature than it is to express it as a reality in our daily life? For me, one answer lies in this: there is a need for us to refuse to believe in a personal ego.

You might ask: "What do you mean by refusing to believe in a personal ego? I'm me, and who else can I be?"
