So Much Has been written about the millennium that many people just don't pay attention anymore. But, as the editorial in this issue of the Journal notes, the millennium that Mary Baker Eddy speaks of is certainly worthy of attention. She writes: "The millennium is a state and stage of mental advancement, going on since ever timewas. Its impetus, accelerated by the advent of Christian Science, is marked, and will increase till all men shall know Him (divine Love) from the least to the greatest, and one God and the brotherhood of man shall be known and acknowledged throughout the earth." The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, pp. 239-240. The Christian Science Sunday School can play an important role in this spiritual advancement.
Mrs. Eddy's view of the millennium can be seen as paralleling that of the prophet Isaiah, who writes, "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them." Isa. 11:6. Mrs. Eddy refers to this picture as a "millennial estate." See Science and Health, p. 514.
Those words from Isaiah are preceded by a prophecy of the coming of Christ Jesus, and the millennial estate can be seen as an effect of Christ's coming. The eternal Christ, Truth, which Jesus so fully exemplified, forwards the millennium, the mental advancement Mrs. Eddy refers to. Christ, God's healing activity in human thought, enabled Jesus to teach and heal, to restore peace and harmony. And Christ enables people today to do the works Jesus promised we would do. See John 14:12 .
