Who were my parents?

From the March 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

My Grandmother Never had a birth certificate. She came from a foundling home. She heard several different stories about who her parents were, but she never knew for sure. When an aunt had a wonderful healing through Christian Science, my grandmother took quite an interest in it. In her study, she was greatly comforted to discover that God was her true Father and Mother.

The spiritual fact that God is the only Parent can remove much pain from the hearts of those who are in doubt over their human origins. Each one is precious to this divine Parent, who creates us, watches over us, and cares for our every need. Over and over again the Bible turns us to God as Father. For example, Malachi asks us, "Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us?" Mal. 2:10. And Jesus referred to God as his Father, telling us to look to the same spiritual source for love and support: "Call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven." Matt. 23:9.

Searching the Scriptures and witnessing God's healing power, Mary Baker Eddy came to understand God as Mother as well as Father. She saw that as there is one God, one Father, there is one Mother as well. In her book Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy writes, "In divine Science, we have not as much authority for considering God masculine, as we have for considering Him feminine, for Love imparts the clearest idea of Deity." Science and Health, p. 517. Our Father-Mother God is Spirit and Love, who creates all identities in the divine image and likeness and maintains that creation in perfect harmony.
