SAFETY

Holding crime in check

There were gunshots, but no one was harmed.

From the March 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A Consistent Awareness of God's loving presence and His care for all is a sure protection from the fear of crime and from crime itself. Evil thoughts and intents can be proved powerless as we come into agreement with what is already and eternally true of God, as we open our thought, through prayer, to His nearness and omnipotence.

The Bible's book of Psalms can be a wonderful help in fortifying our confidence in God's protection under all circumstances. Psalm 139, for example, assures us that none of us can ever be out of the presence of good. One verse says, referring to God, "Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?" Ps. 139:7 . My husband and I had an experience that showed us more clearly than ever that we can never "flee" from the presence of God.

Several years ago, on the way home from our office, we made a stop so that I could visit a woman in a convalescent home. Before we arrived we had been discussing the ever-presence of God's love for all His children. We knew that it was possible for everyone to feel and experience not only protection from being harmed but from doing harm. Soon we parked in front of the convalescent home; my husband stayed in the car while I visited my friend. As he waited, he began to be fearful and felt a sudden urgency to pray about the presence and protection of God. He did so until he felt at peace.
