Testimonies from the 1940s

From the May 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I give this testimony as an expression of my deep gratitude to our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for the healing, saving, and protecting power of Christian Science.

My home has been in the London area since the beginning of the war, and during the blitz periods I had many narrow escapes from bombs. On April 16, 1941, a land mine and an explosive bomb fell simultaneously at the front and back of the block of flats in which I lived. This occurred at 3 a.m., and I was in my sitting room on the fourth floor at the time of the explosion. One moment I was in my brightly lit room, and the next moment all except the floors and the main walls had given way and I was thrown down in the darkness and violently hit, but not hurt. I had been studying the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings since the early evening, so I was calm and fearless.

I called to my friend who was in the room: "I am all right and so are you. God is here, and He will show us the way out." We felt our way in the darkness and found the top of the stairs, and although they were covered with debris we descended with very little difficulty. At the bottom I repeated the ninety-first Psalm to my friend, who was not a student of Christian Science. We were then shown the way out.
