Doing something that matters

The vital role of SUNDAY SCHOOL

From the August 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"My generation wonders if this whole human endeavor shouldn't mean more than owning the biggest car on the block." David Arnold, "Their Turn," The Boston Globe Magazine, January 2, 2000, p. 24 .

Those words were spoken by a college senior. Many of his generation probably look at the world—in his case a rather affluent Western one—with a good measure of idealism and hope, but also with at least a dash of cynicism and skepticism. There's a strong yearning to do something worthwhile, but that yearning can be tinged with despair because many of the world's young people think that doing something authentic and significant requires extraordinary luck, great personal wealth, or selling out to "the system."

The Christian Science Sunday School can tremendously help any young person do something that matters. The yearning can be satisfied and any despair alleviated. How? Through spiritual growth and healing, which are what Christian Science and Sunday School are all about.
