From the August 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It's impossible to estimate the impact that Christ Jesus' life has had on the world. Two thousand years after his birth, people all over the globe still seek to fathom and follow the teaching of this humble man, anointed of God, who walked out of Nazareth and changed the course of humanity forever. What he left to all of us is so much more than a compilation of ethical sayings, or miraculous accounts shrouded in antiquity and controversy. The Saviour's life shines with an undiminished light. It gives indelible evidence of love greater than the human mind could invent.

Our cover article by Marjorie Tis shows how compelling Jesus' life-example can be, even for a child. Other articles in this issue also firsthand accounts of how people continue to "find" Jesus, not only through his teaching but through the application of that teaching by his followers today. Our writers convey the message that knowing Jesus involves far more than adoring a historical person. It includes knowing and feeling the Christ, the divine presence and power that Jesus embodied—an influence that is here now and always, that leads us to greater compassion, assurance, purpose, and healing.

Whether Jesus' story is a new song or an old story—or both—to you, we hope these pages will help you feel how near the love and power of Christ actually are to you—and to everyone.
