Jesus of Nazareth was a healer who cured all types of diseases. While millions have been inspired by these wonderful works of grace and divine power, there are those who keep asking, Why not now? Shouldn't such cures be a natural element of healing practice today? In this commentary,
offers a perspective on Christian healing as a contemporary, scientific practice, growing from the teachings and example of Jesus.Sometimes I've been asked, What does a healer see or realize in prayer that enables the cure to take place? Basing our answer on Christ Jesus' teaching, we might say that the healer discerns the spiritual reality, the creation of God as it actually is rather than as it appears to be to limited human perception. Jesus said, "The kingdom of God is at hand."Mark 1:15. It is possible, then, to discern God's perfect creation here and to love it as God does. This clear view of reality heals, because it reflects God's love.
The spiritual healer discerns the perfect creation of God as the fact of being at the time and in the very place where the patient, and others, see a sick, sinning, frail, or suffering mortal. The Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, states: "Mortals must look beyond fading, finite forms, if they would gain the true sense of things. Where shall the gaze rest but in the unsearchable realm of Mind?"Science and Health, p.264. Specifically, the healer perceives the true identity of the one who has asked for help. This identity is the flawless, spiritual idea of God, who is the divine Mind.
