Testimony from the 1960s

From the August 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Journal

. . . When Christian Science came to me, I was terribly confused. Life seemed empty and incomplete. My husband was away in the armed services and insisted that I join him. I did not want to leave home. At this time some Christian Science literature was given to my brother by his employer. . . . Included in this literature was a copy of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. This book became my constant companion for many weeks. It gave logical answers to my questions about God and man and the universe. The startling thought for me was that in divine Science God is All and evil is unreal. This statement was contrary to everything I had been taught in my former religion. As I continued to study this captivating book, I was certain that Christian Science was going to be my way of life.

Gradually the state of confusion and incompleteness began to disappear from thought. The words of the Preacher came to mind unceasingly: "Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity" (Eccl. 1:2). I continued to study Science and Health, and I reluctantly joined my husband at his naval station, realizing more clearly that the fleeting material concepts left behind are the "vanity of vanities."

In the meantime I qualified for church membership and was admitted to The Mother Church and a branch. I was greatly blessed by this affiliation and by serving on committees. I was offered a position by my branch church and accepted it with thanksgiving. Prior to joining the church, I had experienced migraine and periodic cramps for many years. Each day after finishing the work at church, I would spend the remainder of the afternoon in quiet, studying Science and Health. Several weeks passed before I was aware I was healed. The conditions have never returned.
