Searching for answers . . .

From the January 2001 issue of The Christian Science Journal

As Journal readers wrestle through questions and issues facing society today—and pray about them—they sometimes share these questions, and the answers they arrive at, with us. Here's one such question and answer. We invite you to share your insights, too.

How can we find a solution to the proliferation of gambling in society? And from a practical standpoint, is there really much a person can do to help free someone from a growing dependence on games of chance?

I can deepen my conviction that there is just one God and that He is divine Principle, the source of changeless and perfect law. I can be utterly impressed with this one God. Realizing that chance is no part of God or of His government of us shows me that He is the source of all good. On a regular basis, it's possible for me to realize in prayer that no individual can be made to believe in other gods such as luck or chance. There is just one God, one Mind, and because each one of us expresses Him, there is no other mind to hypnotize or be hypnotized into worshiping a power or god called luck. No such god exists to force us to bow down to chance.
