Christian healing rests on the fundamental spiritual truth that God is infinite Spirit, and He is All. The Bible says, "I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God." Isa. 44:6. Many people are being healed today through even a small understanding of this divine fact.
Let me relate a healing my son had. When he was in the second grade, I drove him to school one morning. After returning home, I began to clean house. Suddenly the doorbell rang. I opened the front door, and there was my son! Only he wasn't alone, the school nurse was with him. She told me that I would have to keep him at home for some time, be cause he had impetigo on his head and face, and it was spreading rapidly. I assured her we would certainly take care of this through Christian Science treatment, and I thanked her for bringing him home.
I immediately began to pray, turning my thought to God, who I knew was the Principle of all that is real. I also felt a need to contact a Christian Science practitioner to pray for us. He confidently assured me that my son would be healed.
I had recently been studying in depth the subject of the allness and omnipotence of Spirit—using the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy. As I now resumed this study, it became quite clear that God and His creation are all that really exist, and that God's creation is perfect. We are actually God's spiritual reflection, or idea, and are therefore incapable of disease or sickness. Our Father-Mother God keeps our true substance safe throughout eternity. Since our real individuality is the exact reflection of God, we can only express the health and perfection of our creator—much like an image in a mirror can only reflect what is in front of the mirror.
Soon I felt calm in the knowledge that God's creation doesn't include any such thing as impetigo. When I was tempted to think about disease, I declared without reservation Spirit's allness, God's dear love for this child and for all His children. This love shows in God's tender preservation of each one's perfect self, and in the ability of divine power to destroy disease. Meanwhile, the practitioner continued to pray with us, too.
There is no authority behind disease.
In about a week, the condition was so much improved that I took my son to the school. The nurse examined him, as did the principal. They were pleased that the condition was healing so quickly. However, they asked me to keep my son home a few more days. I did this, and when he returned the next time, he was accepted into the classroom, with the condition completely healed. It never returned. I was and am deeply grateful for the quickness of this healing through prayer alone.
As we pray and reason about Spirit's allness, we see more clearly that there can be no other cause, substance, creation, or effect but what God authorizes. Allness means all! Nothing else is present. Matter isn't actually a presence; it's just the outward state of a mistaken belief—the belief that life and substance are separate and different from Spirit. This is the basic misconception from which all sickness, disease, and sin originate. Through healing, the Science of Christ enables us to prove the nothingness of these lies.
Since that healing of my son, there have been many others healings in our family. Each healing gives us courage and confidence to persist, even if we have some trouble we think we'll never be rid of! Even a glimpse of Spirit's allness is enough to dissolve sickness and its hold on our thoughts.
God, divine Spirit, is indeed All. In her book No and Yes, Mrs. Eddy writes, "God's law is in three words, 'I am All;' and this perfect law is ever present to rebuke any claim of another law." No and Yes, p. 30. God's law is always present, always governing, and it heals us and our children.
