STARTING POINT

Forgiveness that doesn't keep score

From the November 2001 issue of The Christian Science Journal

This year, the United States will celebrate Thanksgiving on November 22. The November Journal was already on its way to press when the tragic events of September 11 occurred. Although attacks of terror are always committed in the guise of causes or crusades, they are in fact attacks against humanity—against freedom of thought, of movement, of religion. Because of this, the deluded criminals themselves are among the victims of these acts of terror.

We have chosen as our starting point this month an article on forgiveness. Our hearts and prayers are with all those whose hearts may ache over the loss of the loved ones who will be missing this year from the Thanksgiving table.

The Gospel of Matthew doesn't say who might have been troubling Peter when he asked Jesus, "Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?" Matt. 18:21, 22. But it probably wasn't just a theoretical question.
