God is in the details

A TV producer prays for guidance while working on a broadcast.

From the April 2001 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IS IT TRUE what they say: "the devil is in the details"? From my experience, I say no. There's no need to be afraid of things that seem complex. For instance, I was once asked to coproduce and direct a live, national, cable-television network broadcast of a conference of United States mayors. The telecast was to go on for about seven hours a day three consecutive days. The job seemed quite daunting. I had never been involved in anything on this scale before. But as I gained a spiritual perspective on the project, I felt calm about it. I was about to see that, in fact, God is in the details.

It felt right to be involved in this project because the conference had a genuinely constructive purpose, and the motives of those involved were selfless. But the complexities of the production seemed overwhelming: mapping out live panel discussions, working with television crews on numerous segments to be shot and edited prior to and during the broadcast, and using an interactive survey system, which had just been developed. The television audience in a particular city would electronically respond to various questions concerning city government. The results would then be tallied by computer and sent back to us via a satellite link to our television truck.

As director, I also had to set up the shots and run the controls during the live broadcast to bring all these elements together on the screen. But increasingly I saw that my real role was to respond to the order and control of God, who is Principle. It was to witness and participate in the smooth interaction of His ideas. My prayer was to know that everyone connected with the production was under God's control.
