Not 'fight or flight'

Surrounded by a pack of dogs, the writer turns to God for help.

From the April 2001 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I WAS WORKING for a settlement house in St. Louis and going into the heart of poor neighborhoods. Among other things, underfed and abused dogs roamed the area. I learned to depend on God for my safety.

One night while walking to my car, I was surrounded by a pack of dogs. They rushed in on me and started circling around me. My first instinct was to stand still and firmly say "No." When this had no effect, I lashed out at them with my bag. This action caused one to rush in and nip me. I managed to get to my car that night, but I realized that I would have to face the situation again the next day.

At that point, I made the decision to trust God completely.
