Not afraid—and ready to help

The power of God is greater than any evil.

From the June 2001 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The belief in witchcraft is common in Kenya. People think that when someone goes mad, he or she is bewitched. But the power of God and His Christ is infinitely above all other so-called powers.

I saw proof of this one noonday when I was reading Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy. A crazed person came into our house, followed by his wife. She was screaming, because she thought her husband would be beaten by others, as he had been before. I assured her that husband was in safe hands. She wanted to leave with him, but I suggested that she let me be with him for an hour or so. She agreed, but she told me that he was very deranged and that I should be careful.

When she left, he started shouting, "Help me, they are going to kill me." I told him, "God is taking care of you, now." As we were talking, the words "put new wine into new bottles" Matt. 9:17. came to mind from one of Jesus' parables. Then I felt I needed to pour "the new wine of the Spirit" See Science and Health, p.114.into my concept of this man. This "new wine" would express nothing but God's love and truth. I prayed for a heartfelt recognition of God's presence and power governing him. Also, I was grateful that life is wondrously protected through the Science of Christ. I thought, too, about these words in Psalms: "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me." Ps.51:10.
