Angels meet us where we are

Insights can turn into action.

From the July 2001 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I used to work for a company that taught executive development seminars. During these classes, we encouraged participants to write down their insights as they occurred. We expected that attendees would develop the skills and contacts during the program that would allow them to turn their insights into action back in the workplace. Although I'm no longer in that business, I still find helpful what I learned about the power of insights.

Examples of spiritual insight—and its beneficial effect—fill the Scriptures. Often such insights are represented as angels, which guide, protect, and even save people's lives. I think of these angels as God-sent messages that deliver us from trouble and heal us. This description of angels from Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy explains what I mean: "Angels. God's thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect; the inspiration of goodness, purity, and immortality, counteracting all evil, sensuality, and mortality."Science and Health, p. 581.

I learned the power of spiritual insights when my youngest son was ill with a fever. I took him on my lap and held him close while I asked God to tell me what to do. As I was listening for an answer, I heared these words: "His fever isn't real." I pushed that thought aside and asked God for something I could use. But the thought came again: "His fever isn't real." This time, though, the insight went further—"Refuse to believe that it is." That was good enough for me; I didn't need to hear it a third time.
