When we were children, all my sister and I ever wanted was to have long, flowing hair so that we could flick it aside the way movie stars did. We would walk around with our pillowcases tied to our heads, pretending we had long hair. Later, as adults, we both grew our hair quite long—and were very proud of it.
You can imagine my dismay when I discovered one day that the dye used to color my hair had burned my scalp. Eventually, the area became inflamed, an unsightly skin condition developed, and I had a big bald spot. To say I panicked would be an understatement!
Of course, panicking didn't help at all, so I soon turned to the problem-solving approach I've come to rely on—prayer. I knew from having been healed through prayer many times in the past that what I needed was better understanding of my spiritual identity. Science and Health, a textbook that explains how to heal spiritually, underscores this point: "The Christlike understanding of scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea,—perfect God and perfect man,—as the basis of thought and demonstration."Science and Health, p. 259 .
