From a former smoker

From the July 2001 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Yeah, old habits die hard. I remember as a candidate for the Methodist ministry, I smoked. I also had a chip on my shoulder—if anybody had the temerity to criticize my smoking, I was prepared to "let 'em have it."

Same situation—still smoking, but without the chip—after finding Christian Science. I decided to call on the First Reader of the little Church of Christ, Scientist, I was attending in Cedar Rapids. I can no longer recall the matter I had in mind to discuss with him, but I recall vividly what happened late that morning.

I haven't smoked since that day in 1947.
