My first copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy was purchased from a local Reading Room after a consistent desire to own a personal copy of this historic book. At that time, being out of employment, I could not afford to buy the book I cherished so much. I then decided to read it daily at the Reading Room. The first time Science and Health was helpful to me was when I woke one morning and was impelled by an inner thought to pray earnestly for my wife, who was in another city at the time. I had not heard from her for about three weeks, as my phone was disconnected because of my not being able to pay the bills, and the post office in the state where I lived was on strike. I started studying Science and Health daily for about six weeks. This study eliminated my fears and gave me confidence in God as supreme. This passage from page one was very helpful: "Prayer, watching, and working, combined with self-immolation, are God's gracious means for accomplishing whatever has been successfully done for the Christianization and health of mankind." The interpretation of the Lord's Prayer on page 17 gave me assurance: "For God is infinite, all-power, all Life, Truth, Love, over all, and All." About two weeks after this, the strike was called off, and mail came informing me that my wife had been hospitalized for six weeks and that only God had saved her life. I realized that her six weeks in the hospital corresponded to the time I had been impelled to pray and study Science and Health.
I've gained better health since the first day I opened the book in September 1996. Through the study of Science and Health, God met my every need. Our Father-Mother God gave me a job that provided accommodation and free meals for me my wife as a hotel manager. These blessings were showered on me after about six months of consistent studying of Science and Health. No wonder the Bible says, God can "furnish a table in the wilderness."
