P.K. McCary is the author of Black Bible Chronicles, from which this excerpt is taken. Ms. McCary, an African American, is a veteran journalist who has reported for major newspapers and television stations across the United States. She credits her grandfather, a minister in Spencer, Oklahoma, with giving her a deep faith "life is a spiritual connection with God."
