Can a small Reading Room make a difference?

The Society at Rolla, Missouri, takes the "Room" to the community.

From the June 2004 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"We're opening our thought and accessing the community," says librarian Emily Preston, one of five active members of the Christian Science Society in Rolla, Missouri. "The challenge is that the Reading Room is inside the church, and it's just a little door off the side." Few visitors have been coming through that door.

So rather than waiting for people to walk into the Reading Room, the Society took their Reading Room out into the community. They participated in a weekend home show, where some 4,000 people attended. "We asked ourselves, 'What are people coming for?' explains Ms. Preston. "They are coming for ideas about their home. There are bathroom remodelers at the home show, people about vinyl flooring there. So we made a poster that said, 'Decorate your home with beauty, harmony, peace.' Underneath a picture of Science and Health it says, "Everyone should have this book."

The result? Ms. Preston exclaims, "We sold 27 copies of Science and Health!"
