Spirituality.com and reading rooms

From the June 2004 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Today, Reading Rooms worldwide are finding creative ways to use the resources of The Mother Church-sponsored website spirituality.com, as well as csmonitor.com. Listings of upcoming Web events in storefront displays, and computers for online access to Science and Health (www.spirituality.com/dt/toc_sh.jhtml) are ways that Reading Rooms are making the Internet a companion service to their bricks-and-mortar spaces.

Here's an example of how the "clicks-and-mortar" paradigm is changing the landscape of Christian Science Reading Rooms.

A man walked into the Downtown Reading Room in Jacksonville, Florida, to ask about the spirituality.com sign in the window. As librarian A1 Poindexter was showing the man the computer, he indicated that the site was based on Science and Health and showed him how to read the book online. "I typed in a word to show him how to do a word search. His eyes lit up and he reached around me so he could type in the word depression. He liked the passage from Science and Health that came up, and we printed it out for him before he left. He showed up again at the next Wednesday evening church meeting and told about feeling better after visiting the Reading Room and coming to church. He came back to the Reading Room a few days later and spent time reading the Bible and Science and Health."
